Is it really necessary to PLAY at work?

Why not be serious at all times?:

What is PLAY? If you think along the lines of learning, experimentation or interaction, then it makes sense. Wherever creativity flourishes, there is play going on. We all learn as we did when we were children - by playing with ideas. We learn by setting aside the idea that we are limited. We open our eyes.

Here are 3 ways to relate to PLAY when we are at work:

First option: PLAY without working

The individual employee or the group can step away from the tasks and start PLAYING. This is what happens when you step out onto the lawn and start a game of football, or go out onto the walkway and PLAY chair racing. It is fun. It gives energy. Those who want to join will have red cheeks. The community sparkles. If the boss allows it, it is a great way to team build, to focus, to boost enthusiasm and a number of other skills. The boss and the employees know that it costs money. Because while the PLAY is going on, we don't solve any of the tasks. We don't make any money. We choose to see it as an investment. PLAY makes us better at everything that is required of us when we are back at work.

Second option: Let's try PLAYING with the idea that…

We sit down at the meeting table and get started with the somewhat difficult meeting point. The chairperson opens his mouth: 'We have reached the third point, where we must try to find a solution. Let's try to PLAY with the idea that...' With this little word 'PLAY' something happens in the group. So we have to start with something less dangerous. We must report, contribute and try. That little word disarms many conflict-ridden areas. Now it becomes harmless. We can safely throw ourselves into it. The chair person is in fact inviting to PLAY. He invites openness. He invites contributions.

Third option: PLAY and work

If the work is what needs to be done, then PLAY is the way the work can be done. PLAY is an approach, a way. You can shovel snow and cry or laugh at the same time. You decide the approach yourself. You can agree to sing while packing bank statements. You can be impatient and busy. You choose yourself. Some fishmongers in Seattle have chosen their ways of serving customers. They throw the fish. They call out the customers' orders in unison. They dance like fish. They give the fish first aid. They say funny things to customers. The fishmongers PLAY while they work. PLAY and work have merged.
