Teambuilding: How to plan for lasting learning

Lots of leaders have shown the 18 minute film FISH! to their teams and done nothing after that. Silence. Never say anything about it again.  Yes, it's a funny film. It is full of important messages. We should all learn from it. Can't you see that you should all take it in and start behaving in a proper way?

With any film you use there is a BEFORE, DURING and AFTER.

Before

You have to make a plan with what you are doing. Why would you like to use this film in particular? Does it really underline the messages you want to highlight? Does the film carry stuff enough so you can renovate your company culture? Or do you just want to use the film as an icebreaker and thats it? Make up your mind!

You are in a position to do important things in the days and hours before you show the film:

  • Tell your team what they can expect.
  • Invite your team to this extraordinary experience.
  • When they are all seated appoint a few to count or spot important things.
  • Refer to the analysis that points out problems.

During

Show the film with a great sound and a perfect picture in a very dark room. Show it with no pauses or put in some breaks.

  • Ask your team to stand while watching the film.
  • Ask your team to make notes that has value to ...
  • Ask them to hold their hands in very cold water during the film.

After

Everyone on your team must review what they saw. You are their leader and you have an agenda and your job is to keep on developing your team. If you have a plan to change their behaviour you must come up with no less than 7 impacts:

  1. Ask them what they just saw.
  2. Ask them why you showed them this film.
  3. Review what they just saw: Why? What? How much? How often? Why not? Where? When?
  4. Invite everyone to try out what they saw (exercises).
  5. Appoint a few to focus on particular topics for your next team meeting.
  6. Quiz them or do a test.
  7. Hang up posters all over.
  8. Involve them in the design of your company culture.
  9. Make them talk in pairs, trios and in groups.
  10. Offer prices, gifts and reminders.

Company culture

If you really want to renovate your teams behaviour expect to use not only 18 minutes but several weeks, months and years. Plan for a learning journey and invest the time and money for many learning experiences along the way.
