Do this paramount exercise for leaders
The best leader exercise in the world:
Boss Watching: Leading through relationships
Pat O`Donnell of Aspen Skiing Company says: 'The favorite hobby of employees all over the globe is Boss Watching'. The moment you are appointed leader, every word you say, every eyebrow you raise and every smile you smile will be weighed on a golden scale. If you lose your temper with one of your employees, the whole team will think, 'When will I get the same treatment?'
If you are in a hurry and walk past your employees without greeting them, they will wonder if you care about them. Every time you sincerely recognize your employees for their contributions, you send the signal that you care about them and that they matter to you.
Because you are the manager, your employees will invent a story about you inside their heads every single day. How do you want this story to sound? Really?
This exercise is for you who would like to control whats going on inside their heads. And you can control it with this small exercise. You can do it alone, with a leader colleague/employee or with your leadership team. You will get the most interesting result if you complete the exercise with one other person with the option of reviewing and committing.
Imagine that your employees writes an article about you in Boss Watching Magazine Weekly, what would the headline and the story be? How would you like the story to go? Write it down. Use The Boss Watching template above. This is all about the best story you can possibly imagine your employees will write about you and then publish and run in a high number edition. Start with the story and complete it with the headline. The story can be a very practical one where you actually did something very usefull and at the same time had a great attitude.
When you have completed your story tell it to your partner and explain the details. Make sure you both understand both stories. After this comes a very essential part. The review part. Talk through what you both have learned from this Boss Watching exercise. What is the impact of your attitude as a leader? How is it received and perceived by employees or customers or other leaders or even a taxidriver?
